Cultural Adjustment

ADJUSTING TO A NEW CULTURE

It can be exciting to visit a new place that is completely different from your own culture. However, living and being immersed in a new culture for a long period of time is quite different than visiting a country for a short vacation.

Here are some tips to help you transition to life at RISD:

  • Learn about your destination before you travel. Knowing more about the history, social norms, customs, politics, and geography of the country, city and school will help you to understand your experiences while living there.

  • Expect to make mistakes. Even though you’ve learned about the culture, living there is completely different. Don’t be afraid to take risks. It’s how we learn.

  • Keep in touch with your family and friends at home.

  • Tell people about how you are feeling. You are not alone in your discomfort. RISD’s student body is comprised of 35% international students from around the world.

  • Do not isolate yourself. Meeting new people can be scary, but well worth the risk.

  • Keep a journal. It is important to reflect on your experience.

  • Take care of yourself. Eat healthy, familiar foods, stay hydrated, get adequate sleep, and exercise regularly.

  • Make a routine and stay with it.

  • Get involved. The more you get involved the more this will feel like home, and you’ll make new friends.

  • Know your resources. If you have any difficulties at all there are many offices on campus where staff members are happy to listen to you. Several are listed here:
