Curricular Practical Training- CPT


International students only need to apply for CPT if they are doing an internship in the U.S. Students working on CPT may only work part time (20 hours or less per week) while school is in session. Full-time (more than 20 hours per week) work is permissible during school breaks.

  To be eligible you must be an F-1 student who

  • has been in F-1 status continuously for one full academic year (fall, wintersession and spring terms)

  • has maintained F-1 status

  • is a currently enrolled student

  • has an approved internship

  • is earning academic credit for their internship

  To Apply for CPT

  1. Register your internship in Artworks

  2. Complete the OISS CPT Application Checklist online OR bring the following documents to OISS for student staff review:

  • a copy of current Form I-20

  • copy of your passport ID page

  • copy of your current F-1 visa

  • I-94 record obtained at

  • Job Offer/Internship Letter from employer - MUST be on company letterhead and MUST include the following:

    • Start date and end date of employment

    • Job responsibilities

    • Number of hours per week you will work

    • Employer contact information

If everything is complete, we will keep the documents and an international student advisor will approve your Artworks application and process your request for CPT.

Please plan ahead. This process can take up to two weeks.
