Optional Practical Training- OPT

To be eligible you must be an F-1 student who

  • has been in F-1 status continuously for one full academic year (fall, wintersession and spring terms)

  • has maintained F-1 status

  • is currently enrolled or recently graduated

  • if graduated, USCIS must receive your application within 60 days of your completion date

 

How can I apply for OPT?

 

Complete the OPT Modules in CanvasIf you do not have access to the course in Canvas, you can self-enroll HERE. 

 

Gather the following documents/copies/items:

  • Form I-765 -- complete at https://www.uscis.gov/i-765 (must be the most CURRENT version), print the form and save it to a USB drive

  • G-1145 -- complete at https://www.uscis.gov/g-1145 and print the form

  • Copies of all Forms I-20 ever issued

  • Copy of your passport ID page

  • Copy of your current F-1 visa

  • I-94 record obtained at https://i94.cbp.dhs.gov/I94/#/home

  • If you have had OPT before, a copy of your EAD card

  • Two U.S. passport-style photographs (2"x2") taken within the last month and not used on any previous government documents

  • Personal check, bank check or money order made payable to the U.S. Department of Homeland Security in the amount of $410 U.S. dollars

Once you have all of the items above, complete the OPT I-20 Request Form & Checklist. You will need to upload the documents above to this form. 

 

Once we receive and review your completed form, we will schedule a 30-minute appointment for you to meet with an international student advisor.

We will finalize your application and prepare it for you to send to the USCIS. Keep in mind that your application will be reviewed by USCIS and can take three to five months to process.
