As a student on the F-1 visa, it is your responsibility to maintain your immigration status during your time in the United States.
What is a Visa?
A visa is an official stamp or endorsement in a passport issued by a government. The visa indicates that the visa holder is allowed to enter, leave, or remain in the country of issuance.

How to Maintain Status
Upon your initial arrival, provide a copy of your passport ID page, F-1 visa and I-94 record so that we can register you in SEVIS
maintain at least 12 credits in spring and fall semester and 3 credits in wintersession.
request an updated I-20 if you have changed your major, program completion date, name, citizenship, etc.
know your program completion date and make sure your I-20 end date matches. If you need to extend your stay, start the process before the I-20 end date.
do not work / volunteer without authorization. See the Employment page for more information.
do not drop below full-time without consulting an international student advisor.
Notify OISS if you change your address, wish to take a leave of absence or transfer to another school.
