Protocol: If An Immigration Officer Visits Your Office

In the instance that an immigration officer visits campus looking for a student:

1. Confirm the Agent’s government status. Request to see Badge Identification of the Immigration Agent to ensure that they hold legal government documentation of their agent status. Note: Government protocol requires that badge credentials be shown upon arrival.

2. Do NOT offer any student information to the Agent- even if pressed. Please contact the offices/individuals in the order that they are listed below. If you cannot reach one office/individual, move to the next option. Advise the RISD colleague that you have an Agent that will need to speak with them. Confirm that one of the following individuals or offices can/will meet with the Agent:

3. Escort or give campus directions to the Immigration Agent once you are able to get in touch with one of the three offices/individuals. Because of FERPA regulations and other privacy restrictions, DO NOT share any information about a student or anyone else on campus until you put the Agent in touch with the appropriate people. Sharing information without proper clearance could be a violation.
